Angola Timeline
This is meant as a brief summary of the Angolan history where the events are chronologically listed for easy access. I have used this sort of information a lot upon writing my history-pages to be assured that my dates are right.

1483
Portuguese seamen arrive in the Congo river delta
1575
Portugal founds the city of Luanda
1620
The Lunda kingdom of Imbangala was created. It became a strong force in Angola at the time.
1575
The first parts of Angola became colony under Portugal.
1605
The city we today know as Luanda was founded.
1663
The African queen Jinga died, she led forces opposing the Portuguese.
1836
Slave trade officially abolished.
1885
The Congress of Berlin settles colonial disputes between the European powers and creates a clear outline of how to deal with further conflicts.
1898
British and German governments agree with Portugal on colonial holdings.
The governments also allow Portugal a loan for which the colonial rights to Angola and Mozambique acted as security.
1899
Britain guarantees Portuguese territory in Africa (and with that, negates the treaty from 1898)
1951
Angola's status changes from colony to overseas province.
1956
The very early beginnings of independence movements with the founding of MPLA
The administration of the Portuguese Colony of Angola and the Portuguese Protectorate of Cabinda is merged, causing dissatisfaction in Cabinda.
Angola is in a warlike situation as Angolan workers, especially from coffee plantations, rebel against Portuguese rule. 50,000 dead.
1963
Three minor organizations in Cabinda are merged into FLEC.
1974
Revolution in Portugal, colonial empire collapses.
MPLA appoints an internal structure in the party and Dr. Agostino Neto is elected president.
1975
January - Agreement reached between the tree nationalist parties. A transitional government is formed. Later in January, fighting broke out between MPLA and FNLA.
July - MPLA expels FNLA from Luanda (the capital), UNITA becomes fully involved with the war.
October - South African troops enter to assist UNITA and FNLA.
November - Cuban troops enter to assist MPLA
11. November - The People's Republic of Angola and The Democratic people's Republic created respectively by MPLA and UNITA.
1979
President dos Santos takes over after the death of Dr. Agostino Neto.
1987
South African troops confirms their support for the UNITA forces and are engaged in direct military action with Cuba and Soviet.
1988
Peace between the South African, Cuban and Soviet troops in Angola.
1989
President dos Santos and Savimbi agree cease-fire, this collapses that same year.
1991
April MPLA drops Marxism-Leninism in favour of social democracy.
May Angola declared a multi-part state in a new constitution and a peace agreement between dos Santos and Savimbi.
Fighting again broke out in Angola after MPLA won the election.
1993
UN imposes sanctions against UNITA. UNITA has also lost its support from USA who now favours MPLA.
1994
The Lusaka Protocol, a peace agreement was signed between UNITA and the government.
1995
President dos Santos and Savimbi meets to confirm commitment to peace.
1996
President dos Santos and Savimbi agrees to join forces into national army.
1998
The war restarts.
September - split between UNITA and UNITA-Renvovada after the Government suspended UNITA members.
1999
UN ends it's peacekeeping mission.
2001
August - President dos Santos says that he will stand down at the next election, no date is given.
2002
UNITA remerged after 1998 split.
February/March UNITA - forces are continuously loosing land and power, UNITA Generals are killed or arrested.
4. April - Peace agreement signed after the death of Jonas Savimbi.
2003
UNITA, now a political party and not an illegal organization elects Isaias Samakuva as its new leader.
2004
August a plan for elections in 2006 is presented
Illegal diamond miners are being expelled all through the year to regain government control over the industry.
2005
Marburg Virus harms Angola, killing between 300-400 people with an extremely high mortality rate.
2006
February - the elections are postponed and no new date is given.
August - a ceasefire is signed between the Angolan State and FLEC, making peace in Cabinda for the first time since 1975.
