Fortaleza de São Miguel

This is taken from the outside of "Fortaleza de São Miguel" which was a fort constructed by the Portuguese in 1576 to protect Luanda. The fort had some alternations made to it in 1664 when it got its present star shape. Through history, the fort has served several tasks, including a prison for inmates coming from Portugal during the 1800's.

The fort as seen from Ilha de Chicala

Today Fortaleza is a museum of the military powers and history of Angola. The plane below, for example, which I believe is an old Russian fighter, is located on the outside of the museum. Most of the equipment they have is broken or useless, but it is still a very nice place to go for a few hours, not at least to see the fort and the view. If you take the time, look particularly at the azuleiros inside the fort, of which I have no pictures.
