Hospital Maria Pia/Hospital Josina Machel

Maria Pia is located in the outskirts of the Luanda city center. This beautiful building was inaugurated in 1883 by the chief health officer, Duarte Ramada Curto. The hospital was, in 2003 when I last saw it, in a sorry state. I was also lucky enough to be allowed to visit the hospital with aid-workers and got not only a view of the hospital from the inside, but also an impression of Angolan healthcare.

Today the hospital has been renamed to hospital Josina Machel.
