The Bank of Angola (Banco Nacional de Angola) is situated on the Marginal in Luanda, "The Paris of Africa" as it was called in 1872 because of the enormous growth in trade following the end of slavery. The growth in trade continued through all the colonial time, and in the 1950's Angola need an economic centre. The BNA was drawn by the architect Vasco Regalieira. Later, it was inaugurated by the Portuguese President Fransisco Craveiro Lopes in 1956.
The building follows the traditional Portuguese architecture with some adaptations to the Angolan climate. Although the pink colour may be very alarming to some, it suits the building very well and the building gives a good impression of Luanda when you see the city from the sea. Also other official buildings in Luanda are painted this way.
