"Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo," was originally the Convent of Carmelites in 1659 but became the church that we today know in 1689. The Carmelites today have a church near the hospital Maria Pia.
The building itself has been remodelled several times, especially the interior decoration. The paintings that we see today are mainly from the 1700's.

As was common in troipcal architecture, the building is constructed around a small garden. An important reason for this is the cooling effect it has.
