Pictures of Angola

This pictrue was taken on the trip to Sumbe in 2003 and is sadly a very common view in Angola, one of the many scars from the war that will take long to repair. Actually, Angola has reached a record thanks to the landmines: There is one amputee per 334 person and about 1.5% of the population is affected by landmines, according to the statistics of the European Community Humanitarian Office in 1999. Mozambique, another former Portuguese colony, was number 2 on this sad statistic that same year, 87% of the population reported that their daily lives where thwarted by the landmines.

I would also like to remind you that manufacturing a landmine costs between $3 and $30, neutralizing that landmine, costs about $1,000...
