Pictures of Angola

This picture was taken very close to the Cachoeira waterfalls. The tractor did hardly move forward, and the person who was walking in front of it had to clear the road of obstacles, such as small stones, so that the tractor would not get stuck or break down (which most people would claim it already had). He also had to stop regularly not to walk away from the machine. Two hours later, when we had eate our lunch and seen the waterfalls, we headed back the same way and once more met the tractor; it had moved only about a kilometer.

Long before we ever saw this tractor, we heard it. The sound was very like the sound of a huge ship with a heavy-duty diesel-engine. Then, a few minutes later we could see some black smoke rising up above the top of the quite steep hill (how the tractor got up there, I don't know), and we understood that some old machine was about to approach.

Some of us started to walk down the road to get a good photo, and after only a few more minutes of waiting, this appeared on the road. I felt that I would not insult the two young men, and I tried to ask for permission to take a photo (in Portuguese, of course). When I shouted as loud as I could, the closest of the two men, who was only a few meters away from me, smiled and nodded. In the picture, please notice the other tractor that has broken down, and the heap of rubbish surrounding it.
