John Reader - Africa: A Biography of the Continent
John Reader gives an interesting overview of Africa - from geological, anthropological and
historical viewpoints. Indeed, the term 'biography' is a relevant indication of the books
genre and apporach and Reader writes himself that "As a biography of the continent, this
book presents Africa as a dynamic and exceptionally fecund entity, where the evolution of
humanity is merely one of many developmental trajectories that are uniquely evident there."
He also describes Africa as the dark continent, "as the place where a very particular form
of darkness is found - the darkness of humanity."
His analysises go further than this, however, and he also explains modern Africa and its
mindset. Why, after all, does Africa remain a place of poverty and political tension?
