T.E. Vadney - The World Since 1945 (third ediditon)
Vadney's book has become one of my most used reference works. Virtually every aspect of political or economical significane between the Second World War and the end of Apartheid is commented with an impressive overview that Vadney transfers to his reader. This overview applies not only to history, but forms an amazing backdrop for understanding contemporary conflicts and events - an application which Vadney helps his reader develop.

It is particularly interesting that Vadney focuses so much on the Third World - Asia, Africa and Latin America. Indeed, he admits in his bibliographical note that 'two books were of particular importance in developing my overall views of history: L.S. Stavrianos, Global Rift: The Third World Comes of Ange (1981); and James Petras, Critical Perspectives on Imperialism and Social Class in the Third World (1978).' (page 557) Indeed, this is where the majority of the world's population lives its life and where history has continued to develop as conflicts, wars, coups and major changes since the Second World War. The wars in Korea, Vietnam and Angola were all showcases of the superpowers' might and unwillingness to cooperate, while the conflicts in the Middle East reflect both modern religiosity and need for resources.
